What is a Co-Op?
- Co-ops are owned by their members
- Co-ops are accountable to their members
- Co-ops are connected to their community
Being a co-op member means having control over your housing, It also means you have the responsibility to make sure that your co-op is a well-managed and pleasant place to live. If you join a co-op, you will be expected to do the following:
- Buy shares in the co-op
- Pay a monthly housing charge
- Attend member meetings
- Participate in running the co-op
- Join a committee or the Board of Directors
- Help with maintenance
- Organize social events

One of the most important aspects of co-operative living is participation. Greenway is able to keep housing charges low due to volunteer efforts of our members. Before you apply for membership in Greenway, you should discuss with your family how you plant to adjust your lifestyle to make time to contribute to your neighbourhood. Greenway Co-op asks its members to contribute a minimum of 2 hours per month, in addition to attending quarterly members meetings. Each member, representing their household, purchases shares in the Co-op upon joining. The price of these shares is refundable when the member leaves the Co-op. In extraordinary circumstances, when a member moves out, any funds owed to the Co-op by the member may be deducted from the member's shares according to our Occupancy Agreement.

Your participation is required at Greenway
The Co-op lifestyle is all abut participation! The people who live in the cooperative (members), organize themselves into committees and work together to manage and maintain the Co-op in every aspect. It's a group effort and an important commitment! Regular participation is required to maintain your membership in good standing within the Co-op.
Each committee is responsible for specific tasks. For example, we have committees that take care many of the maintenance, landscaping, financial, and administration duties. We strive to perform these tasks as much as we can, not only for the purpose of saving money, but also for fun and community involvement. However, where there is a lack of expertise or when a task is better suited for professionals, we will hire them if necessary. General meetings are held periodically for the membership to vote on important issues. As such, it is mandatory that at least one member from each household attend general meetings, as well as the Annual General Meeting.
One thing that you do not normally experience in typical rental or strata housing is the sense of community. In a Co-op, by working together, we get to know each other, and many members within the Co-op community become great friends! There are no strangers among us, and we enjoy each other's company in both organized and informal gatherings.
